THE FEI NATIONS CUP

of Eventing in Avenches

One of the nine stages of the FEI Nations Cup in Avenches

With less than a month to go before the first Swiss edition of the FEI Eventing Nations CupThe organisers are preparing to welcome the athletes and the public to the site of the Institut Equestre National d'Avenches (IENA). Michael Etherington-Smith, the British builder, has once again been chosen to design the 4* level course which will be concentrated this year on the side of the racecourse

The FEI Eventing Nations Cup will take place from 7 to 10 July at the IENAin Switzerland. After the European Championships in September last year, it was almost a matter of course for the organisers to put their heart into the event and offer the Swiss spectators four days of international level competition. The public will be able to watch the three competition disciplines (dressage, cross-country and show jumping) free of charge. A village of exhibitors, activities for children and several types of catering will be set up to welcome the public.

Michael Etherington-Smith back for the 4*

As at the European Championships, the first two days of the competition will be devoted to dressage on the large sand paddock. A covered stand will be available to the public. The cross-country event, the most eagerly awaited by spectators, will be concentrated on the racecourse this year. It will be just as spectacular and will allow the visitors to follow the riders in the heart of the action. On Sunday, the competition will end with the jumping competition again on the large paddock.

You don't change a winning team! The British manufacturer Michael Etherington-Smithknown for having designed the cross-country courses at the Olympic Games in Sydney (2000) and Beijing (2008), was once again chosen by the organisers for the 4* course. The Swiss Heinz Scheller and the German Martin Plewa will also be working with him this year. While the 4* course at the European Championships was longer and covered a large area of the IENA grounds, this year's course will be concentrated on the racecourse side. It will lead the horse and rider pairs behind the pond before returning to the front of the grandstand.

Names of known Swiss riders

The deadline for rider entries set by the FEI is not yet over. This means that the names of the riders attending are not yet known. However, one piece of information has been confirmed by Dominik Burger, head of the Swiss elite eventing team. Robin Godel, Mélody Johner, Nadja MinderPatrick Rüegg and Beat Sax will be at the start of the FEI Eventing Nations Cup in Avenches. The names of the athletes who will represent the red and white team will be officially announced one week before the event. Will the success of the Swiss team at the FEI Eventing Nations Cup in Pratoni (ITA) allow them to shine once again? We will have to wait until the beginning of July to find out.
