ON THE CROSS-COUNTRY COURSE

WITH MIKE ETHERINGTON-SMITH

British builder Mike Etherington-Smith

is once again at work on the the National Equestrian Institute of Avenches (IENA). Together with the Swiss Heinz Scheller and the German Martin Plewa, he was chosen to concoct a 4* course to live up to its reputation. This year, the track will remain on the side of the racecourse to allow the public to be closer to the action.

Mike Etherington-Smith and Heinz Scheller were in Avenches to place the obstacles on the cross country course. We followed them for a few hours and took the opportunity to ask the British manufacturer some questions. We'll take you along.

"Avenches is a very spectator-friendly place."

MIKE ETHERINGTON-SMITH

Mike, what's in store for the runners this year on the Avenches cross-country course? Do you have any surprises in store for them?

The same questions will arise on the course, but it will have a new flavour as the route is a little different. It is shorter than in 2021 and the obstacles have been placed differently. I haven't really got any surprises in store. I hope so!

If you had to describe your career in three words?

Fair, varied and attractive.

What is special about the terrain here in Avenches?

It's very spectator friendly as they can get a glimpse of many of the obstacles from just two locations. The improvements made to the ground since last year are significant and the atmosphere is very welcoming.

What is the most important thing for you when creating a cross-country course?

The fluidity and balance of the course by making optimal use of the ground to provide a positive experience for horses and riders.

What should you think about or rather what should you not forget?

To many things! The spectators, the management of the day, the livestream, the visibility, the ease of movement around the site. The ground is the most important element of the course, the quality of the construction and preparation of the course is important, as is the dressing of the fences and the look.

If you have to choose between a spectacular or technical course? What do you choose?

Good question but it's not as simple as that! Sport is entertainment, but also competition, and both are equally important.

Any memories of last year's European Championship?

Yes for the team who worked so hard to organise everything in a very short time. They did a fantastic job.
